Chicago - The Musical Milwaukee reviews
Where's the production value?
From the cast to the orchestra, the talent was top notch. However, I couldn't help but feel that the production team was laughing all the way to the bank. Let's face it, the Pantages is huge and there wasn't an empty seat in the house. Considering the cost of even a modest seat in this cramped, get to know your neighbor a little too well venue, one would at least hope to see some production value. The stage was adorned with only the orchestra perched upon bleachers that faced the audience. There was nothing else along the lines of a set or backdrop. I didn't get even a minuscule impression that I had been transported to 1926 Chicago. I don't know. I guess I like to be transported when I go to the theatre. Now, I know many of you will say that Chicago was meant to be staged this way. Perhaps that was Bob Fosse's original concept. Still, there's so much more that can be done with this musical that didn't play with this version.
